Supernova

July 01 2017
July 01 2017

The big bang occurred 13.8 billion years ago, generating time and space as we know them. Some time passed and the solar system formed at some very remote corner of the universeĀ 4.6 billion years ago. The earth came along there shortly after, say, 100 million years after that (or 4.5 billion years ago).

The solar system was not the only part of the universe that stayed busy. For instance, an extremely energetic supernova took placeĀ around the similar time that the solar system formed. We know because the light from this explosion finally reached a few years ago.
